California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). W.J. Beattie was Chairman of the Finance Committee of the Widgee Shire Council and also served as Deputy Chairman of the Widgee Council. He was appointed to the first Vegetable Sectional Group Committee in 1946, and remained a member until his retirement in 1976. From 1961 until 1973 he was Chairman of the Group.
